Mankurad Mango: Goa's GI-Tagged Answer to Alphonso

Mankurad mango is Goa's GI-tagged pride, often compared to Alphonso. Learn its history, four family lines, taste, season, and where to buy it online.

Mankurad Mango: Goa's GI-Tagged Answer to Alphonso

Ask someone from Maharashtra which mango deserves the crown and they will say Alphonso. Ask someone from Goa and they will argue for Mankurad. It is the state's signature fruit, and in August 2023 it earned a Geographical Indication tag, placing it in the same protected category as Alphonso and Banganapalli.

If you have never tasted one, here is what you are missing and why it is worth seeking out this season.

What makes Mankurad different

Mankurad grows in small to medium fruit, usually oval with a slight beak at the tip. The skin is thin and turns a dull yellow-green when ripe, nowhere near as showy as Alphonso's golden blush. That plain look fools first-time buyers.

Cut one open and the story changes. The pulp is a deep orange, almost fiberless, and carries a strong, almost resinous aroma that fills a room within minutes of ripening. Locals describe the taste as richer and more intense than Alphonso, with less sweetness upfront and a longer, more complex finish. It is a mango people either fall for immediately or need a second try to appreciate.

Four family lines under one GI tag

The GI registration for Mankurad does not cover a single strain. It protects four family lines, each cultivated and passed down within a specific Goan household for generations: Cardozo, Costa, Gawas, and Amaral. Growers and old-timers in Goa can often tell them apart by fruit shape and sweetness, though to most buyers they read as small variations on the same rich, aromatic mango.

This family-line structure is part of why the GI tag mattered so much locally. Before 2023, any mango grown in Goa with a rough resemblance to Mankurad could be sold under the name. The tag now ties the fruit to specific cultivation lines and a defined growing region, the same protection that keeps a Devgad Alphonso from being sold as a random Maharashtra mango.

Season and where it grows

Mankurad flowers early. The season stretches from January through May, with the best fruit typically arriving in April. That is slightly ahead of the main Alphonso window, which makes Mankurad one of the first genuinely premium mangoes to reach the market each year.

It grows across Goa's coastal belt, in laterite soil that drains fast and stresses the trees just enough to concentrate flavor in the fruit. Yields are lower than commercial Alphonso orchards in Maharashtra, which is one reason Mankurad has stayed a regional favorite rather than a national household name, at least until now.

Why the GI tag matters if you are buying online

A GI tag is not just a certificate for the wall. It sets a legal definition of what can be called Mankurad and where it has to come from. For a buyer ordering mango online, sight unseen, that matters more than it does at a local market stall where you can smell and squeeze the fruit yourself.

Counterfeit labeling is a real problem with premium mangoes in India. Alphonso buyers already know to check for a Ratnagiri or Devgad GI mark before paying a premium price. Mankurad buyers should apply the same scrutiny. Ask the seller where the fruit is sourced from, and be wary of anyone selling Mankurad well outside its January to May window.

If you want to try it, MangoShop sources Mankurad directly from Goan farms and lists sourcing details, season dates, and tasting notes on the Mankurad mango page.

Is Mankurad the same as Alphonso?

No. They are different cultivars grown in different states. Mankurad comes from Goa and has a more intense, resinous aroma with a less showy skin. Alphonso comes from coastal Maharashtra and is milder and sweeter with a brighter golden color.

When is Mankurad mango season?

January through May, with the best quality fruit usually available in April.

Why did Mankurad only get a GI tag in 2023?

The application process for a GI tag takes years of documentation proving the fruit's link to a specific region and cultivation history. Goa's mango growers' associations filed for Mankurad's protection well before 2023, and the tag was finally granted that August.

Where can I buy genuine Mankurad mango online?

You can order farm-sourced Mankurad through MangoShop's Mankurad page, which lists current season availability and sourcing region.
