Alphonso vs Kesar vs Dasheri: Which Mango Should You Buy

Three of India's most popular mango varieties, compared on taste, price, season, and best use, so you can pick the right one for how you'll eat it.

Alphonso vs Kesar vs Dasheri: Which Mango Should You Buy

If you've only got room in your order for one variety this week, these three are the most likely contenders. Alphonso gets the most hype, Kesar is close behind in price and reputation, and Dasheri quietly outsells both across North India without needing the same marketing. Here's how they actually differ, beyond just which one costs more.

Alphonso: the aromatic, premium choice

Alphonso comes from Maharashtra's Konkan coast, mainly the Ratnagiri and Devgad regions, and carries a GI tag protecting that origin. It's known for saffron-orange, essentially fiberless flesh and one of the strongest, most distinctive aromas of any Indian mango. Sugar content runs around 12 to 14 Brix, less sweet on paper than some other varieties, but the flavor is prized for its richness and complexity rather than raw sweetness.

Season runs roughly April through June. It's the most expensive of the three, and the one most commonly counterfeited, so sourcing transparency matters more here than with the other two. It's the variety people reach for when they want a gift box or a special-occasion fruit rather than an everyday snack.

Kesar: the fragrant, slightly more affordable alternative

Kesar comes from the Girnar foothills near Junagadh in Gujarat, also GI tagged since 2011, making it the second Indian mango variety to earn that status after Dasheri. The pulp is a deep saffron color, similar in appearance to Alphonso, with a sweet, aromatic flavor and a slightly higher Brix range of roughly 13 to 15.

Season overlaps closely with Alphonso, April through July. Kesar is often described as the mango that gives you 80 percent of Alphonso's appeal at a somewhat lower price, which makes it a reasonable everyday alternative for people who love Alphonso's style but don't want to pay premium prices every time.

Dasheri: the fiberless northern favorite

Dasheri comes from Malihabad, near Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, and was the first Indian mango variety to receive a GI tag, back in 2009. It's a smaller, elongated fruit with thin, greenish-yellow skin and notably fiberless, tender flesh. Sweetness sits around 12 to 14 Brix, similar to Alphonso, but the flavor profile is milder and less aromatically intense.

Season runs June through July, later than Alphonso and Kesar, which makes it a good choice for extending mango season once the Konkan and Gujarat varieties wind down. It's widely grown and consumed across North India, less common in southern markets, and tends to be more affordable than either Alphonso or Kesar.

Comparing them side by side

Alphonso leads on aroma and prestige, sits at the top of the price range, and peaks April through June. Kesar comes close on flavor with a fragrant, saffron-colored pulp, costs somewhat less, and runs a similar April through July window. Dasheri offers the mildest flavor of the three but the most reliably fiberless texture, costs the least, and extends the season into June and July when the other two are winding down.

Which one actually fits what you want

If you're buying for a gift, a special dinner, or you simply want the mango most people consider India's best, Alphonso is the standard choice, as long as you're sourcing it from a seller who can verify origin. If you love that style of mango but order more regularly and want better value, Kesar gets you most of the way there for less. If you prioritize a clean, fiberless bite over intense aroma, or you're shopping later in the season after Alphonso and Kesar have wound down, Dasheri is the practical pick.

Which is sweeter, Alphonso or Kesar?

Kesar tests slightly higher on Brix, around 13 to 15 versus Alphonso's 12 to 14, though Alphonso's flavor is generally considered more complex rather than simply sweeter.

Is Dasheri cheaper than Alphonso and Kesar?

Generally yes. Dasheri is more widely grown and doesn't carry the same premium positioning, making it typically the most affordable of the three.

Can I get all three varieties at the same time of year?

Alphonso and Kesar overlap closely from April through June. Dasheri's season extends a bit later, into July, so early summer is the best window to try all three, with Dasheri still available after the other two wind down.

Which mango is best for making aamras or mango pulp?

Alphonso and Kesar are both widely used for aamras and pulp due to their rich color and flavor, with Alphonso considered the premium choice for this specifically.
