July is the cruelest month for mango lovers. Alphonso is gone, Kesar is ending, Dasheri is winding down. And then Chaunsa arrives. The honey-sweet mango from Uttar Pradesh (with roots in the Punjab of undivided India) that makes a case for the late season being the best season.
Also spelled Chausa, Chaunsa carries a historical story: the variety is said to have been cultivated during the Mughal era, with Humayun's general Sher Shah Suri reportedly naming it after his victory at the Battle of Chausa in 1539.

Chaunsa vs Dasheri — The Late Season Debate
Among North India's mango lovers, the seasonal transition from Dasherito Chaunsa is a recognised event. Dasheri gives way to Chaunsa in late June/early July. Many argue that Chaunsa's more intense sweetness and fiberless texture surpasses Dasheri — while Dasheri fans counter that Chaunsa is too sweet and lacks character.
