Many tasters prefer Devgad for its slightly sweeter, rounder flavour. Ratnagiri has slightly more acid which some find more complex. Both are exceptional — it comes down to personal preference.
TERROIR
Why Is Devgad Alphonso Premium?
More Southern, More Maritime
Devgad sits further south than Ratnagiri, slightly closer to the sea, with a marginally warmer and more consistently humid microclimate. This produces a fruit that many tasters describe as marginally sweeter and rounder in flavour — slightly less acidic than Ratnagiri, with a similar aromatic intensity.
Limited Supply
Devgad's smaller geographic area and fewer orchards means total production is significantly lower than Ratnagiri. Lower supply with consistent high demand creates the price premium.
First to Market
Devgad Alphonso often arrives 1–2 weeks before Ratnagiri harvest — giving it a first-mover advantage in the premium fresh market.
