When every other variety is done for the season, Neelam is still going. South India's longest-season mango variety, Neelam stays available from June through August — and sometimes into early September in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It is also historically important as the parent variety of two of India's most successful hybrids: Amrapali and Mallika.

BREEDING LEGACY
Neelam's Significance as a Parent Variety
Neelam is one of the most genetically important Indian mango varieties. Its natural resistance to spongy tissue disorder (a common quality problem in many varieties), consistent annual bearing, and strong flavour made it the preferred parent for IARI's hybrid breeding program. Both Amrapali (Dasheri × Neelam) and Mallika (Neelam × Dasheri) trace their excellence partly to Neelam genetics.
